Nekessa Julia Opoti


Julia is an award-winning writer, producer, and journalist with a track record of promoting and connecting journalists of color and advocating for more inclusive media. She produces and hosts New Americans, a weekly radio talk show focused on immigrants in Minnesota. She was an early leader in crowd-sourced media, having founded Kenya Imagine, which grew to 1,000 contributors worldwide. Her work has been widely published and she is an in-demand speaker, producer, and curator.

An award-winning filmmaker and photographer.  D.A. is a story-based organizer using filmmaking, social practice art, and multimedia platforms to supplant old narratives of Black and Brown pathology with the “story of what works” in our communities.  D.A. builds narratives to promote and inspire collective understanding and to activate a base of support to affect policy change.

As a creative director, community relations manager, and agency owner, Kate is experienced in leading organizations, multimedia campaigns, and institutional and cause marketing efforts for social justice. Her passion is shifting public opinion through issue positioning and creative tactics.
